PROJECT 52 – Week 34

Šjor Tomo
During my stay in Vrboska (Hvar island) I took a lot of photos.
One fine morning, I went out of the house, where my girfriend and I were staying, and was heading to take some shots of the Church which was located on a small uplift above the town of Vrboska. While I was shooting photos with my faithful Oly, a bearded man called me inside one of the houses in vicinity of that church.
When I came in, he sad to me: ”Go ahead, take a few photos, this should be interesting to you.”
He said that his name was šjor Tomo, knitter and fixer of fishing nets.
The surroundings inside this room was colorful. Lots of fishing nets spread around, and on the walls were pictures and posters of players from HAJDUK, football club from Split
A whole history of this famous Croatian club was shown on these walls.
He said to me that he was a great fan of Hajduk.
As the sign on the wooden pillar says:
(Šjor Tomo – Ribar, meštar od mriž – Hajdukovac),
Šjor Tomo was doing this job (knitting and repairing fishing nets), and fishermen from Vrboska and whole island of Hvar were coming to him for more than 40 years.
Very amusing and vivid man, a real historical example of this place.
I said to him: ”Šjor Tomo, can I ask you to stand by your nets, so that I could take a shot?”
”No problem” – Tomo said to me, with a smile.
So there you go, a small story behind this photo. 🙂

PROJECT 52 – Week 16

A Beautiful Smile
My girfriend and me went to Split (Croatia) during one weekend to do some shoping.
We stopped near the Chatedral for a cup of coffee, and some rest. She gave me a gift with her beautiful smile. So that’s the short story behind this photo. 🙂
It’s important not to forget to smile, because one smile can make your whole day better.

PROJECT 52 – Week 14

A View from Above
Mila Gojsalić (also traditionally “Mile Gojsalića”) (died 1530) is a Croatian heroine and martyr.
Her origins are from the village of Kostanje in Dalmatian hinterland and she was a distant descendant of Croatian king Gojslav. She lived in time of Ottoman wars in Croatia. In 1530 Ottoman Ahmed-pasha gathered an army of 10 000 men with a goal to conquer Poljica. He made a camp in a place called Podgrac (Podgrađe). Mila Gojsalić was among other local women forced to lose virginity with Ahmed-pasha. Because of that act she infiltrated the Turkish camp and blew up the munitions stockpile, killing Ahmed-pasha and numerous officers and soldiers. That act completely surprised and confused remaining Turkish soldiers who were then overrun by people of Poljica.
Ivan Meštrović sculptured the statue of her, installed above the town of Omiš, while Jakov Gotovac composed the opera to her honour. August Šenoa also wrote about her.

PROJECT 52 – Week 12

Saint Peter Lighthouse. Built long time ago, to be precise 1884.
Ever since I came in Makarska, I have been planning to take some photos of this unusual lighthouse. Few days ago, after dinner and hard days work, I had just about 10 minutes before it was pitch black, to shoot this photo.
Photo was taken with Olympus E-520 (like all of my photos from this project), and a tripod, with 30 second exposure.

Feelin Free

Feelin’ Free
Back to Split.
After lovely shopping time in City Center One, I went to Riva and took some photos. I waited for the sailboat to enter into composition that was in my mind. The birds were like silver glazing for my photo.
